Athlete Journey

Hello! My name is Summer Denigan, and I am an attacking midfielder on the UNC women’s soccer team. As I enter my fifth year of Division I collegiate soccer, I bring a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game. I am a First Team All-American and a semifinalist for the Mac Hermann Trophy. My journey has included a year at Florida State University and three years at the University of Georgia before transferring to UNC, with each stop providing unique lessons that shaped me into the player and person I am today. I am passionate about every aspect of the game, including training, conditioning, gym work, nutrition, recovery, and stress management. I take pride in approaching soccer with intention, discipline, and a growth-oriented mindset. What motivates me today is the constant pursuit of improvement, finding small, meaningful ways to get better every single day. Off the field, I am deeply interested in learning about nutrition, recovery, mental health, and building sustainable habits. By sharing my experiences and knowledge, I hope to help younger players navigate their own journeys with confidence, purpose, and belief in themselves.

Personal Approach

My personal approach to coaching and mentorship is rooted in honesty, intention, and genuine care for the athlete as a whole. I believe in encouraging athletes to set ambitious yet realistic goals, then building a clear, adaptable plan to reach them, because if something isn’t working, you change the pattern to change the outcome. I treat every athlete as an individual, balancing discipline with support, and I value open communication, accountability, and trust. What I believe separates good athletes from great ones is attention to the little things: character, consistency, competitiveness, and the willingness to show up with purpose every day. My approach to development is holistic, focusing on mental strength, physical preparation, emotional resilience, and strategic understanding of the game. I aim to reproof when necessary, correct with clarity, and always encourage growth, believing that tough conversations and positive reinforcement can coexist. I expect athletes to be open-minded, coachable, and committed to a growth mindset, while also being honest with themselves throughout the process. The environment I strive to create is demanding yet fun, one where athletes feel challenged, supported, and empowered to push their limits. My core belief and personal “why” comes from Colossians 3:23: whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for man. I care deeply about helping others succeed because I know the impact the right guidance, belief, and work ethic can have, not just on performance, but on who you become.
